Lexmark was founded in 1981, as the result of IBM’s sale of its information products business. This is the same group that was best known for the IBM Selectric typewriter, found in virtually every office. Based in Lexington, KY, Lexmark is solely focused on documents and is one of the few American companies to own, develop and market print technologies.

The roots of Xerox can be traced back over 100 years ago to 1903 in Rochester, NY, beginning with the business of manufacturing and selling photographic paper. In 1938, inventor Chester Carlson begins his quest to find an easier way to duplicate information on to paper. This form of electrophotography, would later become known as the process of “xerography” (Greek origin translating to dry writing) and eventually lead to the company name of Xerox. Chester Carlson’s work came to full fruition in 1959 with the release of the first plain paper copier, the 914. From Mr. Carlson’s original goal, “to make office work a little more productive and a little less tedious”, this product launched a major corporation and changed an industry. Today, Xerox continues to be an industry leader and stays true to its core of simplifying how work gets done.
